Dua Qunut Explained

Dua:

اَللّٰھُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْتَعِیْنُكَ وَنَسْتَهْدِيْكَ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَنَتُوْبُ إِلَيْكَ، وَنُؤْمِنُ بِكَ وَنَتَوَكَّلُ عَلَيْكَ، وَنُثْنِيْ عَلَیْكَ الْخَیْرَ کُلَّهٗ، وَنَشْکُرُكَ وَلَا نَکْفُرُكَ، وَنَخْلَعُ وَنَتْرُكُ مَنْ یَّفْجُرُكَ، اَللّٰھُمَّ إِیَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَلَكَ نُصَلِّيْ وَنَسْجُدُ، وَإِلَیْكَ نَسْعٰی وَنَحْفِدُ، نَرْجُوْ رَحْمَتَكَ وَنَخْشٰی عَذَابَكَ، إِنَّ عَذَابَكَ الْجِدَّ بِالْکُفَّارِ مُلْحِقٌ.

Translation:

O Allah, we seek help from You, we seek Your guidance, we seek Your forgiveness and we repent to You. We believe in You and we rely on you. We praise You in the best manner. We thank You and we are not ungrateful to You. We leave and cast off the one who disobeys You. O Allah, You alone do we worship and to You alone, we pray and prostrate. To You alone, we flee and we are quick (in serving You). We hope for Your mercy and fear Your punishment. Verily Your true punishment falls on the disbelievers.

Explanation:

اَللّٰھُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْتَعِیْنُكَ وَنَسْتَهْدِيْكَ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَنَتُوْبُ إِلَيْكَ Oh Allah, we seek help from You in Your obedience and we seek guidance for Your pleasure. We ask that You conceal our sins, and not expose them. We repent to You.

Repentance (tawbah) is to return from sins. In Shariah Terminology it is: To be remorseful of past sins, uproot them from one’s present life, and to make a firm resolution on not returning to sins in the future, out of respect for the commands of Allah Ta’ala. If the rights of anyone are connected to the sin, then it is necessary to seek his forgiveness and please him.

وَنُؤْمِنُ بِكَ“We believe in You.” ‘We believe’ means that we deem truthful while believing in our hearts and expressing with our tongues. We say that we believe in You and whatever has come from You and in Your angels and Your books and Your messengers and the last day and in destiny, that good and bad is from You.

وَنَتَوَكَّلُ عَلَيْكَ “We rely upon You” by entrusting our affairs to You due to our helplessness.

وَنُثْنِيْ عَلَیْكَ الْخَیْرَ کُلَّهٗ We praise you for every single good,” while acknowledging all the blessings you have bestowed upon us.

نَشْکُرُكَ  “We thank You,” by turning all our limbs that You have favoured us with to that which You have created us for.

وَلَا نَکْفُرُكَ “We do not deny Your blessings,” upon us nor do we ascribe them to anyone other than You.

وَنَخْلَعُ “We cast off.” The حرف عطف (preposition of conjunction) is established (in the narration of this dua). The meaning is we throw away, cast off and we remove the noose of disbelief from our necks and the noose of all of that which displeases You.

وَنَتْرُكُ “We separate” (ourselves) from مَنْ یَّفْجُرُكَ “whoever disobeys You,” by denying your favours; and worshipping other than You.

اَللّٰھُمَّ إِیَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ “O Allah, You alone do we worship.” (This statement is) a return (to the proclamation) of praise and specifying Allah’s Being for worship.

وَلَكَ نُصَلِّيْ “And for You alone, we perform Salah.” Salah was mentioned separately due to its nobility since it comprises of all acts of worship.

وَنَسْجُدُ  “And prostrate.” This is a further specification since prostration is the closest position a servant can reach to His Lord the One worthy of worship.

 وَإِلَیْكَ نَسْعٰی“To You alone we flee.” It is an indication to the hadith qudsi, “Whoever comes to me walking, I go to him running.” The meaning is: We strive in (good) actions to acquire that which brings us close to You

وَنَحْفِدُ “We hasten,” in pursuit of Your worship with vigor.

نَرْجُوْ  “We hope,” and anticipate for رَحْمَتَكَ“Your mercy,” meaning its continuity and perpetuity.

وَنَخْشٰی عَذَابَكَ “We fear Your punishment,” by avoiding that which You have prohibited us from. We do not feel safe against Your plan, and we are therefore between hope and fear.

إِنَّ عَذَابَكَ الْجِدَّ “Verily Your true punishment,” بِالْکُفَّارِ مُلْحِقٌ  “falls on the disbelievers,” meaning, is coming for them.
